A Forgettable Column

Theirs, not mine, I hope. To understand this article, you probably should read a recent article published in the Commercial Appeal called “The 10 Most Unforgettable Grizzlies.” In light of the fact that the Grizz are in their 10th season in Mtown, the paper is publishing a “10 for 10” series, 10 articles that consist of lists of 10 people, moments, games, etc. I was pretty excited about this idea; coming off of a dominant performance over the Thunder, I assumed these lists would really rally the troops to fanhood this season. The first several were just what I expected, highlighting the best moments of the Grizzlies’ time here in Memphis- note, the Grizz currently have four of the top ten Grizzlies players ever on their starting five- but then the previously mentioned article came out.

The gist of the article was as follows:

Player (example- Cezaris Trenbanski): drafted way too high/paid too much/too much given up in a trade; played about three minutes a game; the single worst player in the NBA that year (apparently we had the ten worst players ever); not very attractive (except Alexander Johnson.  Things got a little weird describing this “’breathtaking physical specimen”’); scored approximately 1.2 points a game; everyone hated him and the front office for acquiring him.

This may seem like an over-reaction, maybe a little rantical (new word?), but I think “The 10 Most Unforgettable Grizzlies” does this team, this city, serious injustice. Everyone from the Dirty knows the typical Memphian (long story short- we like to complain. A lot. Go read the comments section on any feel-good story the CA publishes. It has more angst than Tennessee football fan). But I really believe that we are on the verge of a breakthrough. The Grizzlies are a team that we can rally around: they are young, explosive, scrappy, fun. We have a legitimate shot at making a run to the playoffs. Yet all this article does is remind the fans of the years of disappointment. Sure, we cannot forget the last ten years of Memphis Grizzlife, but we don’t need to wallow in the letdowns. We need to be getting pumped up for the season. I know I am. Only five more days till opening night!

It was a silly article, but overall, I have found the series to be positive, especially Geoff’s column today about Hubie http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2010/oct/21/grizzlies-2010-11-the-10th-season-in-memphis-the/

Yeah I agree that the series has overall been positive. I even mentioned that briefly, but I just don’t see the point in once again hatin on the front office. I mean haters gon’ hate, but when I see David Williams, I’m gonna be hollerin like Maino.
